The Jomolhari Trek is one of Bhutan's most iconic trekking adventures, offering a journey through the Bhutanese Himalayas with stunning mountain scenery, Buddhist culture, and pristine wilderness.
The trek starts in Paro with a hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery (Taktsang), followed by a drive to Shana Zampa. The trail follows the Paro Chhu River through forests, bridges, and remote yak-herding villages.
A key highlight is Jangothang Base Camp (4,100 m), with views of Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m). An acclimatization day allows exploration of nearby alpine landscapes and peaks.
The route continues over Nyele La Pass (4,877 m) and Yeli La Pass (4,942 m), offering views of major Himalayan peaks like Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. It then descends through valleys and forests to Barshong, ending with a drive back to Thimphu.
The trek is known for its dramatic scenery, wildlife, and mountain culture, making it one of Bhutan’s most rewarding trekking experiences.

Paro
Arrive at Paro International Airport, surrounded by breathtaking mountains, forests, and traditional monasteries. After completing immigration formalities, meet your guide and transfer to the hotel. In the evening, enjoy a relaxing walk around Paro town for acclimatization and orientation. Overnight in Paro.
Acclimatization hike Taktsang
Paro
6.4 KM | 4–6 HOURS | 600M ASCENT | 600M DESCENT | MAX ALTITUDE: 3,120M After breakfast, drive to the Tiger’s Nest base camp and begin the hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery). The hike takes approximately 1–2 hours to reach the cafeteria, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the monastery. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava arrived here on the back of a tigress in the 8th century. From the cafeteria, continue the hike for another 1–2 hours to reach the main monastery. After exploring the site, hike back to the parking area. The descent is generally easier but can be a little tricky, taking around 2 hours to complete.
Shana (2,900m) soi thangthangkha (3,594m)

22KM | 8-9 HOURS | 770M ASCENT | 210M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 3,594M The trek begins from Shana Zampa and follows the Paro Chhu River through dense forests of pine, oak, rhododendron, and bamboo. The trail crosses several streams and bridges while gradually ascending deeper into the Jigme Dorji Wildlife Sanctuary. Passing through peaceful valleys and remote wilderness, you will reach Thangthangkha campsite (3,500 m), offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
Thangthangkha -Jangothang(4100M)
Paro
15KM | 5-6 HOURS | 650M ASCENT | CAMP ALT 4100M The trail continues with gentle climb along Pa chu to another army post. The valley finally widens up gradually to a mere path which ascends to a meadow where same yak herders have their winter home. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful strolls. When the campsite is approached Mt. Jomolhari can be spotted including its neighbouring snowcapped peaks.
Jangothang halt
Today is an acclimatization day at Jangothang Base Camp. Enjoy a scenic hike towards the north, climbing open slopes for spectacular views of Mount Jichu Drake (6,989 m) and Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m). Along the way, you may spot blue sheep, Himalayan birds, and rare alpine flowers. Alternatively, take a shorter excursion to the Tshophu Lakes (4,400 m) or relax at camp while enjoying the breathtaking Himalayan surroundings.
Jangothang - Lingzhi(4,100)
18 KM | 6–7 HOURS | 790M ASCENT | 820M DESCENT | CAMP ALTITUDE: 4,100M The trail climbs through alpine landscapes to Nyele La Pass (4,877 m), offering stunning views of Mount Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Tsherim Gang. After crossing the pass, descend gradually towards Lingzhi, enjoying panoramic mountain views and a glimpse of the historic Lingzhi Dzong. Camp overnight at 4,100 m.
Lingzhi - Shodu(4,100)
19 KM | 7–8 HOURS | 910M ASCENT | 842M DESCENT | CAMP ALTITUDE: 4,100M Leaving the Jomolhari Trek route, the trail climbs through the Mo Chhu Valley towards Yaklay La Pass (4,942 m). From the pass, enjoy breathtaking views of Jomolhari, Gangchen Ta, Tsherim Gang, and Masang Gang on clear days. The trail then descends through alpine landscapes to Shodu Camp (4,100 m), a peaceful meadow surrounded by mountains.
shodu - Barshong(3,680)
16KM | 5-6 HOURS | 470M DESCENT After breakfast, descend from Shodu following the Thimphu Chhu River through dramatic canyon landscapes and cypress forests. The trail winds through alpine meadows and pristine woodland, crossing six wooden bridges along the way. After about four hours of trekking, stop for lunch at a scenic spot. Continue through dense forests and rolling terrain, enjoying occasional mountain views before reaching the peaceful Barshong village. After completing the trek, transfer by road to your accommodation in Thimphu or Paro.
Thimphu - punakha
After breakfast, explore Thimphu’s highlights including the National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma Statue, and the Takin Preserve. Continue the scenic drive to Punakha via Dochula Pass (3,100 m), enjoying views of the Himalayan peaks and the 108 chortens. On the way, visit Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the Divine Madman, after a pleasant walk-through rice fields. Overnight in Punakha.
Punakha - paro
Paro
Punakha – Paro | Approx. 125 KM | 4–5 HOURS DRIVE After breakfast, drive from Punakha to Paro through the scenic Dochula Pass and Thimphu Valley. Enjoy beautiful views of mountains, forests, and traditional Bhutanese villages along the way. Upon arrival in Paro, visit the historic Rinpung Dzong, National Museum, and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples. Overnight in Paro.
Depart Paro
Drive to the airport for departure. Have a pleasant flight back home. Goodbye!
